rock n’ bowl

Let’s rock n’ bowl…

The premise of this project was to create five of the same object, yet make each of them unique WHILE keeping them similar. A challenge…I know. I took two things I have always loved, classic rock, and bowling, and I created Rock n’ Bowl. It is a mini bowling game that creates an old school, rock and roll experience for kids and yes, even adults! This vintage inspired game has a mini bowling lane, lyrics to classic rock songs, and a juke box that actually plays music.

Which bands are they?

I know you’re probably curious as to which bands I picked. Well, I’ll tell you. But figuring out which box is who, that’s up to you, a little rock and roll challenge if you will. Starting off strong with The Rolling Stones, followed by Pink Floyd, Guns and Roses, Queen, and last but certainly not least, Fleetwood Mac. All bands that I grew up listening to, and continue to love.

Are you ready to rock?

The box…

One of the biggest challenges I met while creating this product, was figuring out how to make a round box. I’ll tell you how it was done. By cutting the outside edges of the cardboard without puncturing through, it allows the cardboard to move and bend, acting like an accordion, and held together by small velcro patches. It is then wrapped in a vinyl, allowing flexibility.

The Design…

The outside design is inspired by a few things. As stated earlier, each box is inspired by a classic rock band. The color palettes are modeled after one of the bands album covers. The middle illustration is a bowling ball in the center of a vinyl, to further push that vintage aesthetic. Finally, the triangular shapes and lines mimic bowling lanes and the flashing lights from rock concerts.

The inside…

When the box is opened up, you are greeted with an illustration of a juke box, and a mini bowling lane set up. The pieces can be found in a hand stitched denim pocket, that is velcro’d to the inside. And yes, the juke box plays music. If you look closely, to the left of the juke box it says “press the center of the record for some tunes”. By pressing the record, a song from that bands album will start to play. The same system that is used in birthday cards that sing to you, hides behind the vinyl wrapping.
